Do you need to comply?
No, but schools are encouraged to establish a head lice management plan.
Conditions of compliance
Head Lice (Pediculosis) are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. Head Lice is not a notifiable condition and head lice do not transmit any infectious diseases.
If you have to comply, what do you have to do?
The discovery of head lice can be a sensitive issue and student and family confidentiality should be maintained. Principals should use discretion if wishing to alert the school community about an infestation of head lice.
Exclusion of a child from a school centre is determined by the principal or person in charge of the school as children with head lice can be readmitted to school after treatment has commenced.
Schools are encouraged to:
develop head lice policies and implement practices and procedures. This may include ‘Parent managed head lice programs’ and/ or Municipal council programs.
distribute policies and information on the detection, treatment and control of head lice to parents and staff annually or more frequently if required.
What are the consequences if you don’t comply?
A whole school outbreak may occur. Your schools reputation in the community maybe compromised.
