Do you need to comply?
Yes, under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic.).
Conditions of compliance
All primary and secondary teachers, and principals (who have previously been employed as teachers) working in government, Independent and Catholic schools in the state of Victoria, are required by law to be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
If you have to comply, what do you have to do?
A school principal can check the registration status of teachers by:
- asking to see a teacher’s current registration card
- going to the secure online teacher registration status report facility (VIT login and password is required).
Access to the site is restricted to school principals or their authorised delegates for the sole purpose of ensuring that the school employs registered teachers (password access is required – contact VIT if you require a new password.).
What are the consequences if you don’t comply?
You will be in breach of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic.) if you employ a person who is not registered or does not have the appropriate level of permission to teach with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Penalties may apply to both the employer of an unregistered teacher and to the unregistered teacher.
