Maggie Fanning is Principal of EdSpace, located in Benalla, regional north east Victoria.
EdSpace aims to provide individualised educational programs for students aged 11-18 with medical or developmental disorders affecting their success in mainstream schooling. EdSpace has a therapeutic ‘wraparound’ approach, incorporating health and education services with a holistic approach to student wellbeing.
Maggie’s qualifications include nursing, midwifery, child and adolescent health and sexual health, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. She came to education through her son’s diagnosis of cerebral palsy and autism. After meeting other parents with children unable to manage their environment in either mainstream or Special Schools, she helped found EdSpace through the charity, Capability Building Inc.
EdSpace’s student outcomes have been excellent, including successful VCAL completion, return to mainstream schools, and ongoing study at TAFE and university. Two graduate students have completed traineeships and are employed at EdSpace.
EdSpace has two enterprises open to the public, in which students learn work-related skills and complete their VET/VCAL studies, including Agriculture, Animal Studies, Outdoor Recreation, Business and Screen and Media.
