Research by Independent Schools Victoria is revealing what motivates parents to choose a particular school for their children.
Deciding on the right school is one of the most important decisions parents can make for the future of their sons and daughters.
Choice of schools provides parents with the opportunity to select, not the best school, but the school that best matches the character, needs and strength of their child.
Our research over the last eight years confirms that this is one of the three most important criteria for parents choosing Independent schools. Parents told us that the Independent school they selected suited their child’s needs better than other schools. Parents also emphasised the development of sound morals, values, beliefs and attitudes and the reputation of the school.
Surveys of Independent schools in Victoria provided opinions of more than 55,000 parents, 86,000 students and 40,000 teachers and staff.
Teachers and staff have given us their top reasons for working at their Independent schools – pride in the school, they were happy to recommend it and they could rely on colleagues to provide support or assistance when needed.
Year 12 students told us in their exit surveys that the school was a safe place in which to learn, they had been encouraged to attain the best academic results possible and they had positive relationships with other students.
These results match earlier research that indicated parents want their children to be safe, protected and happy and to develop as individuals, learn life skills and grow their talents.
Details about our school surveys are in the Independent Schools Victoria 2013-14 Annual Review that can be accessed on our website.
