About LEAD – our story so far….

Our Story

The LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys are made for the Independent education sector by the sector. It is the most comprehensive survey platform on the market.

The LEAD surveys aim to provide schools with high-quality tools to self-evaluate, plan and continuously improve in order to realise their full potential.

We achieve this by providing externally validated survey instruments, comprehensive data analysis and the innovative LEAD Report, which help schools develop an evidence base on which to make informed decisions on planning and resource allocation.

The History of LEAD

Where it all began…

In 2006, Independent Schools Victoria developed a staff survey for Member Schools. This was the basis of today’s LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys.

The following year, due to the success of the staff survey, a parent survey was developed.

Building on this platform, in 2008, surveys for general and Year 12 exiting students were added to the original surveys, along with a pilot governance survey. The LEAD Report, which helps leaders test whether the perceptions of their stakeholders match the school’s reality, was also introduced to provide schools with a 360-degree view of school performance.

Finding the Right Performance Metrics

From 2008 to 2011, Independent Schools Victoria’s domains of school effectiveness were developed and refined to better serve our Member Schools.

After a long period of refining and consolidating the LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys, we sought to validate our survey tools and domain structure for the benefit of schools. Beginning in 2013, Independent Schools Victoria worked with Cambridge University to assess the validity of our surveys and our domain structure.

The university’s peer reviewed research study on the LEAD surveys concluded in 2015, finding that the surveys are ‘conceptually, theoretically and statistically sound and can facilitate schools’ efforts to identify their needs and priorities for improvement’. This provides confidence to our schools that the LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys actually achieve what they set out to do – measure school effectiveness.

Where to Next for LEAD?

In 2016, we continue to strive towards our goal to provide schools with high-quality tools to self-evaluate, plan and continuously improve in order to realise their full potential.

We are always looking at ways to innovate and build upon LEAD’s success and develop improvements for the benefits of our schools. In 2016, we have developed additional benchmarking capabilities and refined our reports to make it easier for schools to understand and assess their effectiveness.

Over the next 18 months, we will continue to develop new innovative ways for Member Schools to make the most of the LEAD School Effectiveness Surveys.
